On Mashups...

Mashups are intensely awesome creations made by mashing two awesome things together. I love mashups, especially ones that are done well. Here are some of my favorites:

Okay, a lot of those are Star Wars. I like Star Wars.

New assignment for Ryan Wood's Digital Painting for Illustration II: Texture creature. I decided to make a mashup. Mashing together the awesomeness of a sea tortoise with the awesomeness of an octopus. Creating the uber-awesome TORCTOPUS. (Well, the idea is uber-awesome.)

We needed a creature with at least three textures, riding, driving or using some kind of vehicle. So here are a couple of steps in the process:

First, the line drawing, just graphite on paper.

Scanned in the drawing and opened it in Painter 12. Added some color for the comp review. Ryan's notes: flatten shell with more gentle curve, lengthen front arms and raise up scooter, bring in more color variation to the octopus section. You can also see some of my reference.

Here is the final painting. Some of the contrast was lost in the flattening, but you get the idea. Happy torctopus.

What are your favorite mashups?

Here are some other paintings, my favorites from class:
